Developmental Assets Profile Survey

PURPOSE:  To examine young people’s own sense of their strength, supports and skills so that we as a community can

  1. advocate for change in laws that affect children in care;
  2. help to inform what additional supports and programs the Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay should provide;
  3. help us to better understand the unique needs of children in each placement type.

DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS PROFILE (DAP) MEASURES:

The DAP assesses the strengths and supports that a youth self-identifies as having/experiencing.   By looking at a broad range of surveys of our population, we hope to be able to determine what strengths and supports are youth are lacking so that we can improve those strengths and supports in the future.  The survey asks questions about five different asset building contexts:

and are then measures these assets within those contexts:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is the Developmental Assets Profile (DAP)? DAP is a survey that examines young people’s own sense of their strengths, supports, and skills that are essential for success in school and life.  Based on 25 years of research on youth development, it has been used with more than 600,000 youth around the country and around the world.  The results help to create a common understanding of the strengths and support in young people’s lives so that our young people can be better supported.

How will young people’s answers be used?  DAP results will be used in three ways 1) advocate for change in laws that affect children in care;  2) help to inform what additional supports and programs the Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay should provide; and 3) help us to better understand the unique needs of children in each placement type.

Who should take the survey?  Youth in grades 4 -12 are who should take this survey.

Are the surveys confidential?  Yes!  Confidentiality of our youth is essential to us.  While we are collecting some basic demographic data, there is nothing that will link a survey to a child as there is no way to trace a survey to a child.  We will only know how many children participated in the survey but we will have no idea who they are.

Will it re-traumatize my child/teen or make them feel bad?  This survey looks at a child’s assets not their deficits and it does not ask any questions about behavior or risk-taking.

How will we learn about the results of the survey?  We will keep you informed every step of the way and communicate what we learn via email and in-person meetings, conversations and In-Services in the Spring of 2020.

I don’t have a portable computer, tablet of smart phone. Will you have devices available for me to use?  Yes.  We have tablets at each office that you are able to check out to help you fill out the survey with your child/teen?  We would appreciate if you would return in a timely manner after you have visited so that another VCA can borrow it as well.

Does the DAP survey have to be done on a computer, tablet or Smartphone?  No, but it will require a few extra steps if the survey is not completed online.  To fill out the paper version you will need to

  1.      Choose the correct form. There is a survey for children who are ages 9 -10 and a survey for adolescents ages 11 -18.
  2.      Please turn in the form at your closet GAL Program Office, email to amyf@galf6.org or send via mail to Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay 14250    49th St. N., Suite 4000 Clearwater, FL  33762

My child doesn’t read very well or is unable to see, can I read it to them?  Absolutely. We want all children regardless of ability to be able to participate in the survey.

What if my child doesn’t understand a question can I re-word it or explain it?  You can help clarify a question but please do not re-word a question. If they still don’t understand, they can simply skip the question.

We didn’t finish the survey, can we come back to it later?  Unfortunately, no, since it is completely confidential and there is no tracking mechanism. The survey must be done in one sitting.  It should take no more than 15 minutes.

Can my child/teen skip a statement?  Yes.  We don’t want to make any child uncomfortable. They can skip any statement that they don’t want to answer, for any reason.

Why are there so many different survey links?  The survey is a standard survey based upon 25 years of expertise in determining strengths so we are unable to customize it.  We believe that it is important to understand how placement can affect a child/teen’s assessment of their own strengths, skills and supports so we created different links so that we can compare those data sets to one another.
