One Voice, One Child: Eli & Hope

Eli and Hope are living with foster parents due to their mother’s substance use. After parental visits, they “act out” and cause disruption in the foster home. The Guardian ad Litem volunteer suggested the children needed an outlet to help them deal with their frustrations about their living situation. Eli began playing tackle football and Hope signed up for cheerleading. The foster parents report that the team sports have fostered a sense of belonging and helped them to make new friends in their new location. She also noted that she believes their participation has contributed to more discipline and self-control. Without the ability to participate an these extra-curricular activities the placement could have broken down and caused more disruption in these fragile children’s lives.
